Quick answer

Make the practical decisions first.

Plan where the map will sit and how it will attach before fixing the first piece. Follow the exact model's instructions, check the wall condition, mark the complete footprint and dry-position the template. For a rental or future move, check how both the map and its wall-fixed backing come off. Use the maker's cleaning guidance once installed.

Your starting checklist.

  1. Check the wall condition, finish, hidden services and product instructions first.
  2. Lay out every piece and test the full footprint before fixing anything.
  3. Adhesive, magnetic and LED-backed maps require different installation plans.
  4. Do not promise damage-free removal unless the maker supports it for that surface.
  5. Use dry, gentle cleaning and avoid moisture, chemicals and strong heat.
How we review

Before installation: verify the product and the wall

There is no universal wooden-map mounting method. A light multi-piece map with adhesive tape, a magnetic veneered map and an LED map on stand-offs place different demands on a wall. Read the current instructions supplied with the exact model before drilling, applying adhesive or removing protective liners.

Check five things first:

  1. Wall condition: it should be dry, clean, sound and free of loose paint, dust, grease or active damp.
  2. Wall construction: identify plasterboard, plaster, masonry, concrete, wood panelling, tile or another surface before choosing fasteners.
  3. Finish: fresh paint must cure for the period specified by its maker; textured paint and wallpaper can reduce adhesion or be damaged during removal.
  4. Map construction: record the total weight, panel depth, supplied template, fixing parts and any pieces mounted separately.
  5. Services: before drilling, account for concealed electrical cables, plumbing and the intended LED power route.

If the wall is damp, crumbling, newly repaired or structurally uncertain, stop and resolve that first. Supplied adhesive does not make an unsuitable surface safe.

Plan the finished footprint

Measure the usable wall area, not only the empty width. Account for furniture, doors, shelves, switches, sockets, radiators and any compass, Antarctica panel, landmarks or island groups that extend beyond the main continents.

Use removable painter’s tape to mark the outside width and height. View it from the main entrance and normal seating position. Confirm eye line and furniture clearance before opening adhesive packs.

Then unpack on a clean, flat surface:

  • identify all main panels, islands and accessories;
  • compare the contents with the maker’s checklist;
  • arrange pieces in installation order;
  • identify the template centre line and level reference;
  • test any lighting or controls before mounting, where the instructions permit.

Photograph the laid-out components. It provides a useful reference if a small piece is misplaced during installation.

Adhesive-mounted multi-piece maps

Adhesive installation is common for non-LED plywood and fibreboard maps. The installation and care guide describes using the supplied positioning system and product-appropriate adhesive method. Other manufacturers, including Your Wooden Map, WeLoveCut and GeoArte, publish their own package and mounting details.

A general sequence is:

  1. establish a level horizontal reference;
  2. position and secure the paper or card template without stretching it;
  3. dry-position the major panels and confirm the full outline;
  4. apply only the quantity and placement of adhesive specified for that piece;
  5. mount the large reference pieces first;
  6. add smaller land areas, islands and accessories in the stated order;
  7. press or cure each fixing for the specified time before removing support.

Do not substitute a stronger adhesive casually. Extra bond strength may damage paint, wallpaper, plaster or the map during correction and removal. Conversely, weak consumer tape can fail under weight even if it initially sticks.

Magnetic and removable systems

Some products separate wall attachment from the decorative map. Wooden Amsterdam’s world map, for example, describes a magnetic floating system. This can make alignment, replacement or relocation easier, but only if the wall-mounted base is installed correctly.

Verify:

  • how the magnetic or metal base attaches to the wall;
  • whether screws, plugs or adhesive are used;
  • the map’s installed depth and required clearance;
  • whether individual panels can be realigned after mounting;
  • which part of the system, if any, is intended to be removable.

“Magnetic” does not automatically mean the wall attachment is damage-free. It describes how the visible panel connects to its backing, not necessarily how the backing connects to the wall.

LED map installation

LED maps add weight, spacing, electrical components and a cable path. Plan the power position before choosing the visual centre of the map.

Confirm:

  • the input voltage, supplied adapter and plug type;
  • the nearest suitable socket and cable direction;
  • whether the power supply remains accessible;
  • the supplied backing, stand-offs and fasteners;
  • wall-appropriate anchors for the complete installed weight;
  • ventilation and minimum clearance stated by the maker;
  • how controls pair and where receivers or cables sit;
  • which smaller pieces still use adhesive.

Never route a mains lead through a wall, conceal a power supply, modify wiring or improvise electrical connections unless the product instructions and local electrical rules allow it. Use a qualified installer where fixed electrical work is required.

Textured walls, wallpaper and rentals

Adhesive performance depends on surface area and finish. Deep texture reduces contact. Wallpaper may separate from the wall or tear even when the adhesive itself releases cleanly. Delicate, chalky or poorly bonded paint can lift under modest force.

For a rented home:

  • obtain permission where drilling or permanent adhesive is restricted;
  • check the maker’s instructions for both any removable panels and their wall-fixed backing, together with your landlord’s requirements;
  • test any adhesive in an inconspicuous place for the full recommended dwell time;
  • keep spare paint and record the original wall condition;
  • assume some touch-up may be needed unless the manufacturer explicitly warrants otherwise.

No general guide can promise damage-free removal across every paint, wallpaper, humidity level and installation age.

Cleaning and routine care

Start with a clean, dry microfiber cloth or a soft dusting brush. Support delicate pieces with the other hand instead of pressing them toward the wall.

Avoid:

  • soaking the surface or allowing water behind the panels;
  • household sprays, alcohol, solvents, abrasives or furniture polish unless explicitly approved;
  • steam, persistent condensation and mounting directly above strong heat;
  • pulling on small islands, engraved details, cables or LED components;
  • rubbing printed surfaces aggressively.

If the maker permits damp cleaning, use a barely damp cloth and dry the area immediately. Test an inconspicuous edge first. Natural wood and wood-based panels can change dimension with moisture, so persistent dampness is a placement problem rather than a cleaning problem.

For LED products, disconnect power before cleaning and keep liquid away from adapters, connectors, strips and controls. Replace electrical parts only with maker-approved specifications.

Removal and relocation

Use the manufacturer’s current removal procedure. Some adhesive systems advise gradual warming and slow peeling; others use a pull tab, cutting line or replaceable backing. Apply heat only when the map and wall-finish instructions support it, and keep it controlled.

Work from the least visible or smallest supported piece, protect the map from bending, and stop if paint, plaster or veneer begins to separate. A scraper can mark both the wall and the wooden edge. Magnetic decorative panels should be removed from their base before addressing the wall attachment.

After removal, label reusable pieces and store them flat in a dry place. Adhesive components normally need replacement rather than reuse.

Final installation checklist

  • Exact model instructions and contents checked
  • Wall clean, dry, sound and fully cured
  • Finished footprint marked and viewed from normal positions
  • Level reference and template secured
  • Correct adhesive or wall-rated fasteners available
  • Hidden services considered before drilling
  • LED map tested and cable route planned
  • Large panels mounted before small islands and accessories
  • Required pressure or curing time followed
  • Care and removal instructions retained

The best installation is not the fastest one. Careful wall assessment and a verified full-size layout do more to prevent misalignment and damage than adding stronger adhesive after a problem appears.
